In Taoism (Daoism) and Buddhism, mala beads (also known as prayer beads or rosaries) serve as spiritual tools for meditation, mantra recitation, and mindfulness. While their use is more prominently associated with Buddhism, Taoism also incorporates similar practices with beads for meditation and energy cultivation.
Buddhism & Buddha Mala Beads (佛珠, Fózhū)
In Buddhism, mala beads (usually 108 beads) are used for:
Counting Mantras – Reciting sacred chants (e.g., "Om Mani Padme Hum") to accumulate merit and focus the mind.
Meditation – Helping practitioners maintain concentration and mindfulness.
Protection & Blessings – Some Buddhist malas are made from sacred materials like sandalwood, bodhi seeds, or lotus seeds, believed to carry spiritual energy.
108 Symbolism – Represents the 108 human defilements (kleshas) or the 108 auspicious signs of the Buddha.

Taoism & Beads (道珠, Dàozhū)
In Taoism, beads are less standardized than in Buddhism but are still used for:
Energy Cultivation (Qi Gong / Nei Dan) – Some Taoist practitioners use beads to circulate Qi (energy) along meridians.
Counting Recitations – Similar to Buddhism, Taoists may use beads to count mantras or sacred texts (e.g., "The Secret Incantations of the Jade Emperor").
Talismanic Use – Certain beads (like cinnabar or amber) are believed to ward off evil spirits and enhance longevity.

Lacquer & Urushi
Lacquer & Urushi are two kinds of Oriental Art, which born from the sap of a magic toxic plant "Toxicodendron vernicifluum" in China and Japan. It is an actient craft over 7,000 years in East Asia, this organic material hardens into a durable, glossy coating when exposed to humidity, creating a perfect blend of beauty and functionality.

The Sacred Craft of Urushi Lacquer
Nature’s Liquid Gold: Raw urushi sap is carefully collected, refined, and hand-applied in dozens of layers, with each coat requiring days of drying in humid chambers.
Timeless Beauty: When polished, urushi develops a deep, mirror-like glow, often adorned with gold inlay, carved designs, or mother-of-pearl (e.g., luodian 螺钿 lacquerware).
Spiritual Significance: In both Buddhist and Taoist traditions, urushi’s durability and radiant finish symbolize imperishable wisdom and inner refinement—making it a favored material for sacred objects like Buddha mala beads, ritual boxes, and altar pieces.

Lacquerware in Spiritual Practice
Buddha Mala Beads: Urushi-coated prayer beads are prized for their smooth touch and longevity, aiding in mantra recitation and meditation.
Taoist Ritual Objects: From incense burners to deity statues, lacquerware’s protective qualities align with Taoist beliefs in harmony and immortality.
Cultural Legacy: From ancient royal courts to Zen monasteries, Chinese lacquerware embodies the fusion of art, spirituality, and nature’s alchemy.
